Sweetwater County, Wyoming Offers Unexpected Foodie Finds Jenn, February 25, 2017February 26, 2017 Sharing is caring! Share Tweet Pin Sweetwater County, Wyoming is home to stunning mountains, pioneer trails and sand dunes to name a few things. It is also home to some great food. You may think Wyoming is home only to cowboy cuisine, it’s time to change the way you think. The best part of travel is tasting local cuisine, and learning what makes a destination stand out. Sweetwater County, located in southwest Wyoming, serves up a heaping helping of fun food that is the perfect “side dish” after working up an appetite exploring the 10,500-square miles of pure desert adventure. Sweetwater County, Wyoming Food Finds Java Peddler The best coffee drinks around are served up at Java Peddler, a unique barista business in a bike shop. The shop was established in 2004 and focuses on great drinks, including coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, espresso, smoothies and other blended beverages. Best of all for peddlers, you can grab a cup of Joe while learning about the extensive biking trails in Sweetwater County from the local experts. Cowboy Donuts The shop’s motto, “Dang Good Donuts,” pretty much says it all! Cowboy Donuts was featured on Food Network’s competition show Donut Showdown. The shop makes over 55 varieties of fresh donuts each day, including hand-chopped apple fritters, frosted donuts and the traditional glazed donut. The shop also offers kolaches – butter bread stuffed with everything you can imagine. Fresh-made coffee or a cold glass of milk offer the perfect accompaniment. Bitter Creek Brewing Established in 1997, this brewpub serves up some legendary microbrews and a delectable menu of dishes created from the finest ingredients. The atmosphere is casual and family friendly, and the service is superb. The microbrews are seasonal and include Coal Porter, the winter dark beer that gets a slight roasted flavor from “chocolate” malt. Red Desert Ale is a red-colored ale that contains a complex malt bill and has been dry-hopped to enhance the floral aroma. Sweetwater Wheat is a good choice when it’s warm. Food choices range from burgers and chicken wings to Cajun shrimp and andouille sausage pasta or a Cajun pork chop. Hitching Post Restaurant & Saloon Don’t let the modest exterior of this local’s favorite fool you! The Hitching Post Restaurant and Saloon was recently remodeled inside, and has some of the best food in town. It starts with appetizers like mashed potato bites, nachos, jalapeno poppers and battered cheese curds, to name a few. For the main course, you can choose from inventive sandwiches, tasty burgers, hearty pasta dishes and (for dinner only) selections from the grill including rib eye steak, country fried steak and salmon. There is a salad bar and lunch buffet, ensuring no diner leaves hungry! Open Range This restaurant is located inside the Best Western Outlaw Inn and features food that is as exceptional as the service. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunches on special occasions like Mother’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. Creative salads keep diners who are watching their waistlines on track, while entrees like baby back ribs, veal cutlets and Rocky Mountain trout ensure those who want a vacation splurge aren’t left behind. Wyoming’s Big Show From July 30-August 6, travelers can belly up with some of the best fair fare in the West. This event is quintessential Sweetwater County, and the food at the Big Show is far from “fair!” Here, travelers can eat an assortment of delicious dishes ranging from fried one-of-a-kind creations to traditional temptations like funnel cakes and giant turkey legs. Cajun Shrimp Boil at River Fest As a kick-off to the annual River Festival held each August in Green River, the Cajun Shrimp Boil is a real crowd-pleaser. Tickets ($25 for adults/$15 for kids) are limited, and always sell out, so travelers should make purchase plans early. The feast includes boiled shrimp and sides, as well as the option to visit the Microbrew Garden. For those who aren’t a fan of shrimp, The Knights of Columbus serve a spaghetti dinner option. It’s family fun for everyone! To learn more about planning an adventurous escape to Sweetwater County, visit TourWyoming.com. Travel family travelsweetwater countytravelusa travelwyoming
