The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot
An epic story of a chipmunk who discovered meaning and purpose while pursuing his ambitious dreams to change the forest forever.
As a young chipmunk, shy, bookish Rockford T. Honeypot had dreams of thrilling adventures across the forest. However, timid of danger and germs, his only adventures were found in books and his imagination. When his family abandons him after a mistake that destroys their hazelnut business, Rockford sets off on a legendary journey beyond his wildest dreams. From exploring cuisines with a famous chef, training with ancient warrior monks, flying on giant hawks, finding true love, and much more, Rockford recounts his epic origin story of hardship, perseverance, and fortune.
During a visit to a local market, Rockford is recognized by the locals. A news agency joins the fun and live streams his visit while he shares his life story. That is where this heartwarming tale of overcoming obstacles and pursuing your dreams begins…
This book is an absolute delight, and perfect for kids ages 9-12, depending on your children’s reading level. The story talks about everything from family relationships, to tricky friendships. The chapters are short, but do go back and forth between the present and the past, which may be confusing for younger readers. My eleven year old was able to follow along, and she isn’t a strong reader.
While there are many silly and fun moments, there are also more serious elements that are dealt with (poverty, loneliness, social differences, love triangles). While not anything earth shattering, some younger readers may not be aware of what these are and comprehend them. I felt the serious moments were more mature, as they were told by Rockford, the adult, and we were not seeing them through a child’s eyes. All in all I loved this book, it wasn’t too mature nor too young. The story stayed true to its plot, and in the end, we learn that NOTHING is impossible.

“No mater the struggles, some things will never change. The sun will rise every morning, the rivers will continue to flow with life, and the vines will resume their never ending quest towards the sun” — I think this quote perfect summarizes this story. No matter what comes your way, good or bad, you keep moving forward. Many kids can relate to that message, especially after the strange obstacles that have been thrown their way as of late.
