One of the best things about summer is spending time outdoors, soaking up the sun with your friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, what can go along with those days sometimes is a nasty sunburn. While we all do our best to make sure that we protect ourselves from the harmful rays of the sun, now and then a sunburn can sneak up and take us by surprise.

Sunburn Remedies

When that happens, you want a quick and effective way to get relief from the heat and pain that go along with that inflamed skin. Here are a few easy ways that you can relieve sunburn pain

1. Soak in a Cool Bath

A good soak in the tub can do wonders for sunburn pain. Just be sure that your bath water is at a tepid to cool temperature, rather than warm. You will also want to avoid using soaps and other bath products that could have chemicals or perfumes that will further irritate your skin, at least on the areas that are the most irritated from the sun.

2. Pour in a Little Vinegar

If a cool bath just doesn’t seem to be enough, add a cup of apple cider vinegar into the mix. The vinegar helps to balance the pH of your skin and can help promote healing and reduce itching. Add about 2 cups of vinegar to your bath water, then soak and soothe your sunburned skin.

3. Brew Up Some Tea

A little ice cold tea sounds great after a hot day in the sun, but it can offer more relief than that. Try brewing up a pot of black tea and, once it has cooled, apply it to your skin with compresses. The tannic acid in the tea helps to draw the heat out of the sunburn and other components of the tea can help to heal and soothe your skin.

4. Slather Up with Aloe

Aloe based lotions or gels can be a real help when it comes to soothing sunburn. Even applying aloe straight from a plant can help to relieve sunburn pain. It is important to note that it is not recommended to use aloe products that contain lidocaine or benzocaine. While they may provide very temporary relief, they can in fact cause further irritation of your skin when used on a sunburn.

5. Use OTC Anti-Inflammatories

Reach for an anti-inflammatory to help cut the discomfort of your sunburn. Ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin will help to reduce inflammation and relieve some of the pain that you are experiencing with your burn. Take care to follow dosing instructions closely, as improper use can cause serious health issues.

6. Essential Oils

Make a homemade sunburn spray using lavender and peppermint essential oils, along with aloe vera juice and coconut oil, for a great remedy.

Though it’s always advised to avoid a sunburn in the first place, there are ways to manage the discomfort and cope as your skin is healing. Always be sure to keep an eye out for blistering, fever, chills, and dehydration as these can be a sign of sun poisoning. If you suspect that you may have sun poisoning, seek medical care as soon as possible.
