stargirl- DC Universe
With the premiere episode of Arrow in 2012, a television show based on the DC comic book character Green Arrow, DC launched what has come to be known as the Arrowverse. This is a series of interconnected television shows, all based on DC Comics characters and taking place in the same fictional universe, allowing characters to appear across multiple series.
In 2020, the latest addition to this universe was a new show entitled Stargirl. Led by executive producer Geoff Johns, Stargirl premiered on DC Universe, DC’s independent streaming platform. Episodes have also been broadcasted on the CW Network, which hosts the original Arrowverse programs. Following its titular hero, Stargirl joined Supergirl and Batwoman as a very well-received, female-led superhero show in the DC Universe roster.
A New Start In Stargirl, the title character is created when teenager Courtney Whitmore finds a powerful staff that has special abilities. Equipped with this staff, Courtney begins an adventurous quest to avenge the losses of the previous staff holder, Starman, and his fellow heroes in the Justice Society of America (JSA). That organization was defeated by the conversely named Injustice Society of America.

Similar to the better-known Justice League, the Justice Society of America was a collection of heroes from DC Comics’ lore that united to fight the evils of their world. Among the leading members of the original Justice Society of America are Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Dr. Fate and The Flash. In Stargirl, Courtney adopts her heroine persona and attempts to resurrect the Justice Society of America with fellow newcomers adopting the hero mantles of old.
Young Heroes In addition to Stargirl, the new Justice Society of America includes several other prominent heroes. These include new iterations of Wildcat, Hourman and Doctor Midnite. All three of these young vigilantes take on the names of former JSA members. Wildcat is gifted with catlike reflexes, agility and razor-sharp claws. Hourman is able to gain traditional super abilities like enhanced speed and strength for one hour at a time before needing to recover. Lastly, Doctor Mid-nite has the ability to see perfectly in the darkest conditions with no visual aids.
Among its cast, the show features Brec Bassinger as Courtney/Stargirl, Luke Wilson as Courtney’s stepfather Pat Dugan and Amy Smart as Courtney’s mother, Barbara.
While production has been slowed due to COVID-19, Stargirl has been renewed for a second season. You can catch Season 1 on The CW!
