Escape to Gettysburg, PA at Liberty Mountain Resort Jenn, September 22, 2016February 1, 2021 Sharing is caring! 3 shares Share Tweet Pin3 Disclosure: I was provided a 2 night stay in return for a review, no further compensation was given. Are you thinking of a weekend getaway this Fall or Winter? When you think of Gettysburg, PA you think of quaint B&B’s and history lessons. Located just eight miles from the most historical town in the Civil War is Liberty Mountain Resort. Offering golf and outdoor activities in the warm months and a ski resort in the winter months it is perfect for a family to stay and play. Last weekend I found myself nestled in the mountains of Pennsylvania at the Liberty Mountain Resort. With my weekend being about a trip to Gettysburg National Battlefield I wasn’t sure this would be the best fit. I live a short 90 minute drive from Gettysburg and don’t stay overnight generally, we were celebrating my friend’s birthday so we made a weekend of it. I figured we would spend our weekend in a quaint bed and breakfast with civil war era innkeepers, that didn’t work out and I am glad. After staying at Liberty Mountain Resort I am so glad we weren’t in town after all. Liberty Mountain Resort Liberty Mountain Resort is in Carroll Valley, Pennsylvania near the Catoctin Mountains. Just eight miles southwest of historic Gettysburg, and five miles north of Emmitsburg, MD, the resort is convenient from both the Baltimore and Washington, DC metro areas, as well as all of south central Pennsylvania. With its central location the resort offers the perfect escape from city life for a weekend or a night. Upon arrival I pulled up to the newly opened Highland Lodge; it was rustic with a modern twist, just what I like in a mountain lodge. The lodge only has 114 hotel rooms and I love that, it never felt crowded or over run with guests and it was clearly full for weddings and fall golf retreats. My guest room was located just off the Highland Lodge building in the Fairway Rooms. I was overlooking the Carroll Valley Golf Course and the mountains. The view was breathtaking and a lovely way to enjoy my coffee on the balcony. The rooms are well-appointed at Highland Lodge at Liberty Mountain Resort, I had a king suite with a large bathroom, sitting area and pull out sofa with a private balcony on the second floor. I saw a two queen room and that was also quite large; certainly large enough for a family of four. I feel they made the rooms larger so there was room to store golf or ski equipment, smart move for sure. WHAT WORKS FOR FAMILIES Spacious rooms Free Wi-Fi in all rooms and lobby Indoor pool (open year round) and Outdoor pool (open seasonally) Moderate pricing (around $225 for a standard overnight) during peak season 100% Non Smoking rooms Ski, Snowboard and Tubing on site for winter getaway Close to local attractions in Gettysburg without being in the center of town Laundry room In room refrigerator WHAT DOESN’T WORK FOR FAMILIES No free breakfast unless you are booked on a package that includes it No kids club or evening activities for kids Liberty Mountain Resort Overview I really enjoyed this resort immensely for my weekend in Gettysburg, even if it is eight miles south of the battlefields. The ride to the battlefield and historic areas took less than 15 minutes and was really easy to navigate. After a long day exploring the town it was lovely to come back to the Highland Lodge and enjoy a night-cap at the Eagle & The Owl Public House, a friendly up beat pub serving food and offering live music each weekend. They also have outdoor corn hole, shuffle board and over 20 beers on tap. If you don’t want to travel for dinner you can enjoy an elegant setting at Ike’s Chophouse for a steak dinner among other offerings. This would be ideal after a long day on the slopes or the greens when you don’t want to go far. While I didn’t have time to visit the spa I would certainly come for a massage after a long day of golf or skiing. This is a fantastic amenity for sure. Offering ski or golf packages Liberty Mountain Resort is the perfect weekend retreat. Be sure to make time to visit local festivals in Gettysburg and surrounding areas while you are here. The upcoming Apple Harvest Festival is a fantastic kick off for fall and family friendly. The front desk let me know they still have some availability for this event the first two weekends in October. I will be back to Highland Lodge at Liberty Mountain Resort with my family. I think we will make great winter memories here this year; while I am not a skier I do love tubing with the family and sitting around the fires after a long cold day.
