Free Fall Baltimore celebrates its ninth year by bringing wonderful free cultural activities to your doorstep. With more than 250 unique events anticipated, you’ll be able to find an exciting activity on almost every day in October.

Free Fall Baltimore is a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA), the city’s non-profit special event agency, arts council and film office. BOPA champions the important role of creativity in building a vibrant, exciting and livable city, energizing not just the arts scene, but Baltimore as a whole. The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts developed the Free Fall Baltimore program to increase access, interest and attendance in the city’s many cultural organizations, especially for families and young adults, who are the creative community’s future patrons.

Free Fall Baltimore is made possible by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, and the generous contributions of BGE, The Abell Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, American Trading & Production Corporation (Atapco), The Henry and Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Foundation, and the Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Charitable Funds.

All of the activities are FREE, however some may require additional registration due to limited space. You can find the full list of events on the website.

One of my favorite events is FREE Family Sunday at the Baltimore Museum of Art. You do need to go online and register for the event so that you have tickets.

Bring the whole family for drop-in art-making workshops held each week from 2-5 p.m. This October’s projects are inspired by the BMA’s African art collection. Art educators provide instructions and all materials are supplied. Free admission.

October 11 – Sculpt Miniature Gold Weights

October 18 – Print Geometric Patterns

Another great event for families is the Oktoberfest Block Party Celebration held in Canton at United Evangelical Church on Sunday October 25, 12-5pm. Again this event is FREE, just bring cash for some of the delicious food for sale

8th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration and Block Party!  Sour beef & dumplings * bratwurst & hotdogs * German potato salad * homemade desserts * outdoor beer garden * live German music * puppet shows * raffles & games * free face painting & crafts for kids * AND MORE!  This community event is organized and sponsored by United Evangelical Church and its parishioners.   Oktoberfest takes up the 3200 block of Dillon Street in Canton.

Last but certainly not least is the American Visionary Art Museum Free Fall Halloween Celebration held October 30 from 4-7pm. Umm did someone say GOONIES?

4-7pm: Free “Lumin-Eeries” Lantern-Making Workshop! Monsters & their Mummies are invited to create their own eerie luminary lantern, BYO Glass Jar (any size w/ label removed), all materials: glue, paper, googly eyes & bling provided; ALL AGES family workshop in our Sculpture Barn & Face Painting too!

4-7pm: Free Museum Admission! Explore the latest AVAM exhibition: The Big Hope Show, & tour the rest of our wonderland campus.

7pm: Free Flick: The Goonies (1985)! Bring a blanket and get cozy on Federal Hill, as our critically acclaimed outdoor movie series, Flicks From The Hill, makes a special, one night only October appearance. Costumes encouraged! (Movie rain location: inside AVAM’s Jim Rouse Visionary Center, 3rd floor)

Head out this October and enjoy one of the many Free Fall Baltimore events! It’s always a fantastic time.
