Family Friendly London Landmarks

On a first trip to London with kids, you will definitely have to visit the city’s famous landmarks. Many of these are certainly part of the tourist stops, but the kids love them, too. After all, kids have often heard of the tourist spots, and they want to see the sights with their own eyes. Here is my list of family friendly London landmarks.

  1. Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is located in the heart of London, and everyone who visits the city ends up here at least once. The kids are likely to recognize the lions that guard Nelson’s Column, and they’ll definitely want to take photos with the bronze beasts.

  1. St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is the nation’s church and a symbolic landmark in the city. Kids will love climbing to the dome for a simply amazing view. You will want to book your tour in advance, as this is a top destination for sightseeing. You cannot take photo or video inside, so put down the phones and enjoy the beauty.

  1. The London Eye

You can’t miss the giant Ferris wheel on London’s River Thames. The London Eye will give you a bird’s-eye view of the city. While you can reserve tickets in advance, you may want to wait until the day you wish to visit to make sure the weather is clear.

  1. Westminster Abbey

Each year, Westminster Abbey welcomes over 1 million visitors. Kids can enjoy a scavenger hunt, which leads the kids through each area of the abbey. Parents can browse the tombs and memorials while kids are looking for the answers to their list of questions. A completed questionnaire earns a treat from the gift shop, so the kids have an incentive and learn a bit of British history in the process.

  1. Tower of London

The Tower of London is another must-see attraction for families, as it offers a little something for everyone. Visitors can learn more about the tower’s history, see suits of royal armor, and admire the display of crown jewels while exploring the fortress. Older kids will enjoy the free 60-minute tours conducted by the Yeoman Warders. Popularly known as Beefeaters, these tour guides entertain the crowds with intriguing tales of imprisonment, torture, and execution.

The kids will also be fascinated by the tower ravens, which you can see around the grounds. According to popular legend, the kingdom and the tower will fall if the resident ravens ever leave the fortress.

  1. Buckingham Palace

The Changing the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace is one of the most popular attractions in London. To get a good view of the ceremony, visitors start getting into place up to an hour prior its start. From April to July, the ceremony takes place daily at 11 a.m. It takes place on alternate days from August to April.

If you visit any of these family friendly landmarks, the kids will certainly have stories to tell when they return home from London.
