Let me be clear and say that I am not a DIY professional, not even close. As a member of the Chick-Fil-A Mom’s Panel I was challenged to make a DIY project from an empty salad container. After staring at the container it came to me, a succulent garden would fit perfectly. I am happy to share the very easy steps to make your own garden in under 30 minutes.
In order to begin this project you need an empty Chick-Fil-A salad container. Currently I am on a Spicy Southwest Salad kick, but please feel free to enjoy any of the three salads offered at your local restaurant. Be sure once you finish you take your empty salad container home with you, this is the most important part of making your succulent garden.
Next up; stop on the way home from Chick-Fil-A and pick up two or three succulents, rocks and soil. Yes these are really all of the items you will need for your garden. I told you it was simple. The reason that succulents are perfect for this container is they are small and don’t require a lot of soil or water. They will thrive in the sun with little to no maintenance.
Ingredients for a DIY succulent garden:
- Chick-Fil-A salad container
- planting rocks
- two or three small succulents
- glue gun
Now it is time to make your garden. Begin by poking holes in the bottom of the container with scissors for drainage, as I said succulents don’t require tons of moisture.
Once you have poked holes in the bottom you will flip the container over and hot glue the lid. The lids have 4 tiny holes in them, this way more moisture can drain off. If you intend to keep the container inside you may hot glue the holes closed first.
Flip your container over and fill the bottom with a layer of potting rocks/pebbles. Again this is for optimum drainage and to keep the succulents from being water-logged. Once the rocks are in place put down 1 inch of soil.
Now that you have the rocks and soil in place it is time to plant your succulents. You will want a small plant for this container. Succulents are in-expensive as well so this is not heavy on the purse strings. It is also very easy to do with kids!
Once you have the succulents planted you will place one more layer of potting rocks on top of the soil.
That’s it! Your succulent garden is complete. You can either leave it inside in a full sun window or place it outside in your garden or on the patio. Succulents do not do well in cold weather, so be sure they will get plenty of sun and heat if you place this outside.
I hope you will make a garden and upcycle your Chick-Fil-A containers. If you do please be sure to come back and share what you made with me.
