Historic Bed & Breakfasts of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Jenn, January 19, 2017February 1, 2021 Sharing is caring! 0 shares Share Tweet Pin Bed and Breakfasts are a staple in historic Gettysburg and each has its own tale to tell. From Civil War hospitals to a front row during the Battle of Gettysburg each Inn offers a rich history. Take a look with me at my three favorite Inn’s of Gettysburg. Bed & Breakfasts in Gettysburg, PA Living only 65 miles from Gettysburg I have the opportunity to explore this historic town anytime I want. One of my favorite events this year was the Holiday Homes Tour, this allowed me to preview seven different inns in the town. I wanted to share my three favorites with you, because they are positively perfect for a weekend away. Battlefield Bed & Breakfast This historic farmhouse dates back to 1809, before the Civil War and sits just behind Big Round Top on the Battlefield. The farmhouse was used as General Merritt’s Headquarters (Union Cavalry.) The historic barn was a field hospital; and after Pickett’s Charge, the farm was used as a Union cavalry camp. Talk about walking in the footsteps of history. The Inn’s rooms each have a personality reflecting the history of this property and the story of the Battle of Gettysburg. You may even find a union soldier among you during your stay. Sitting on a 30 acre nature preserve just outside of town you can escape the city life and relax the days away. You may even bring your dog with you as this is a pet friendly Inn. Unlike many bed and breakfasts the Battlefield accommodates families as well offering rooms that will sleep up to four. Each morning you will enjoy breakfast in the quaint dining room among other guests; included is a chef’s choice entrée, breakfast meat, farm potatoes, fruit, baked goods, orange juice, coffee and tea. There is also a history program in the morning that will get you in the historic state of mind. This Inn is perfect for photography lovers as there are birds, cats, wild flowers and many historic sites to capture here. I personally fell in love with the large deck overlooking the pond, it was serene and calm. Exactly the environment one would look for to getaway. Offering 10 unique rooms to choose from you will surely find one that suits your needs. Each room has a private bathroom and is stocked with toiletry items for your needs. If you are looking for a romantic escape treat yourself to Houghtelin’s Hideway. This room offers a King size bed, a leather sofa, and patio. Enjoy a rain shower with a stone arch entrance or relax in the deep soaking tub. This room is dedicated to Cornelius Houghtelin. the abolitionist who lived in the farmhouse during the Civil War. For the horse lover you can stay in the original tack room in the 1820’s barn. This room is included with the barn venue for special events on weekends but it is released to the public ninety days before a weekend date if there is no scheduled event. This luxury bedroom has been preserved to the beautiful workmanship of the original barn. Be sure to check their website for specials and events before you book. Inn at Herr Ridge If you are looking for haunts on your trip to Gettysburg this would be the place to find them. The Battle of Gettysburg played out in the fields surrounding Herr Tavern. During the Civil War the building functioned as the first confederate hospital. In the main, historic building of the property, Rooms 1, 2 and 3 were the surgical rooms during the war. Offering 17 unique rooms you will surely fall in love with each. Each day guests receive a complimentary gourmet breakfast and an afternoon tea with snacks. In the true form of bed & breakfasts not every room offered has a private bathroom, this also saves you some money. For as couples weekend the Inn offers a few rooms with a two person jacuzzi tub. Herr Ridge is home to two distinct, award-winning restaurants, the Tavern and Sharpshooter’s Grille. Whether you are interested in a formal, sophisticated dining experience, or a casual, family atmosphere, there is something for your travels. Also offered are distinct wine dinners, as they have a wine cellar on site of over 6,000 wines. This Inn would be fantastic for a Grape Escape in Gettysburg and Adams County. The Swope Manor This is by far my favorite Inn. The Swope Manor has a rich history in Gettysburg dating back to 1793 when a two-story log home was first built on the property. In 1836, Mr. Swope tore down the log home and built the manor home you see today. On July 1st the Swope family would watch Union men retreat from the battlefield racing by their windows with the Confederates close behind. Just a few steps from The Swope Manor off Stratton Street an unidentified Union soldier was found by a Gettysburg citizen mortally wounded clutched in his hand a picture of his three beautiful children. The war stretches far into the streets of Gettysburg and touched almost everything you see far beyond the battlefields. The Swope Manor is located one block east of the town square in downtown Gettysburg. If you want to spend the weekend exploring local shops and visiting wine tasting rooms this is the ideal location as the town is very walk-able. Offering 13 rooms this is one of the larger bed & breakfasts in Gettysburg. From executive suites to deluxe chambers the Inn has a very elegant feel that carries throughout the house. The library was by far my favorite part of the entire house, each wall was covered in books of every type. A book lover’s dream for certain. The rooms are well-appointed and on the larger size even if they aren’t one of the premium suites. Each room does offer your own bathroom, which to me is important. No offense but I don’t like sharing a bathroom with strangers. Each morning you will have a home cooked breakfast before heading out to explore the town. No matter which bed & breakfast in Gettysburg you choose they will not disappoint. From friendly innkeepers to historic locales your weekend away will be one to remember in Gettysburg.
