Christmas on the Potomac at Gaylord National

Last weekend we had the pleasure of staying at Gaylord National Resort and enjoying Christmas on the Potomac, I highly recommend this for a holiday treat. Located in Oxon Hill, MD just outside of DC and Northern Virginia it is a short drive from Baltimore and surrounding areas. Held this year from November 21- January 3 there is still plenty of time to visit.

The focal point of the event is the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center, located on the beautiful Potomac River. A gorgeous hotel and convention center it offers something for everyone in the family from an indoor pool to huge arcade, and multiple dining venues for every budget. Be sure not to miss the evening snowfall and atrium show on the hour from 6-9 p.m. We absolutely enjoyed this show and saw it twice. The Potomac Express a miniature holiday train for kids 12 and under is a fun treat. And what better way to celebrate the Holiday season than a visit with Santa Claus, the times can be found on your Christmas in the Potomac event guide when you check in.

If you are looking for fun dining options with the family you can enjoy Kris Kringle’s Holiday Feast located in Pienza Marketplace. Topper and Kris Kringle will greet you during a bountiful holiday breakfast or dinner buffet where you can join them in a “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” sing along, a fun conga line and special photo experiences. Reservations are required and this dining experience is only available on the weekends. If you are looking for something really special you can enjoy Brunch with Santa on December 13 & 20 at the Old Hickory Steakhouse. Enjoy a four course holiday brunch featuring seafood, filet, omelets and more all while spending time with St. Nick. Reservations and pre-purchase is a requirement for this event, these can be purchased at Gaylord National tickets.

The main attraction at Christmas on the Potomac is ICE! at Gaylord National. You can book an overnight package or you can visit the attraction itself without staying at the hotel. There is a fee for ICE and it varies depending on the day you plan to visit, also this event sells out plan ahead and purchase tickets early. This year’s theme is based upon the beloved classic special Santa Claus is Coming to Town. A chilling 9 degrees ICE! can be quite cold inside, be sure to wear a few layers and don’t forget gloves! You will be provided a parka upon arrival, but that will not be enough to keep you warm inside the exhibit.

Our family lasted about 35 minutes before we couldn’t feel our faces, it was time to depart ICE! and explore the Village of the North Pole. We were able to get a hot chocolate, the kids rode the carousel and we shopped in a winter wonderland. You can also make gingerbread men or houses to take home at the Peeps Gingerbread decorating corner.
