Farewell to Captain EO at Epcot

Epcot has been home to Captain EO for almost 30 years! Can you even believe that? Captain EO first wowed audiences in 1986. Executive producer George Lucas and director Francis Ford Coppola brought the revolutionary filming process to the park. The process included using twin 70mm polarizing projectors and 4D in-theater effects. Those special effects included asteroids, lasers, laser impacts, smoke effects and starfields that fill the theater. I remember when I was little thinking how cool that show was, really anything with Michael Jackson was cool by my standards.

The interactive intergalactic adventure includes Captain EO and his crew crash landing on the surface of an alien planet where they present the Supreme Leader of the Dark Side with a gift. Unfortunately, the gift is not well received and Captain EO and his crew have to use some cool dance moves and songs to conquer the darkness. The result is an innovative and entertaining show that brings together Michael Jackson’s best moves and songs like never before. Aside from the way it was made and the special effects, the attraction also grabbed audience’s attention with its show-stopping performances, choreography and original songs written by Michael Jackson including “We Are Here to Change the World.”

Walt Disney World has officially confirmed that the popular Epcot ride Captain EO will be closing December 6, 2015. Taking its place is an all-new experience that will transform beloved Disney and Pixar animated shorts into an exciting 4D experience.

Farewell Captain EO and Hooter, it’s been a fun ride!
